Everything flows

چکیده
S ometimes, an important aspect of the world is so obvious that we simply take it for granted. We rarely discuss it or even think about it explicitly. In our opinion, the processual nature of reality— that it is fundamentally a sequence of interconnected occurrences or events—is one such aspect: we continually experience change, but tend instead to explain the world in terms of static things. For historical reasons, Western philosophy—and with it the scientific world view—largely adheres to this notion: that substance is fundamental and processes are mere epiphenomena or derived properties of things. The tradition can be traced back to ancient Greek philosophers, such as the atomists, and it is still prominent today in both research and everyday life. Almost without exception, science seeks explanations in terms of things that exhibit some kind of agency: the fundamental particles of physics, for instance, or genes as hereditary factors and determinants of form, physiology and behaviour in biology.

Advancing Public Health on the Changing Global Trade and Investment Agenda; Comment on “The Trans-Pacific Partnership: Is It Everything We Feared for Health?”
Concerns regarding the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) have raised awareness about the negative public health impacts of trade and investment agreements. In the past decade, we have learned much about the implications of trade agreements for public health: reduced equity in access to health services; increased flows of unhealthy commodities; limits on access to medicines; and constrained policy...
متن کاملThe ecology of markets.
Economies are sometimes viewed as analogous to ecological systems in which "everything is connected to everything else." In complex modern economies, the question arises whether the market mechanism can appropriately coordinate all the interconnections or whether instead some supramarket body is needed to coordinate the vast web of human activities. This study describes how an idealized decentr...
متن کاملKaleckian Models of Growth in a Stock Flow Monetary Framework : A Neo - Kaldorian
This paper integrates a stock-flow monetary accounting framework, as proposed by Godley and Cripps (1983) and Godley (1993, 1996, 1999), with Kaleckian models of growth, as proposed by Rowthorn (1981), Dutt (1990) and Lavoie (1995). Our stock-flow accounting is related to the social accounting matrices (SAM) originally developed by Richard Stone in Cambridge, with double-entry bookkeeping used ...
متن کاملLife's Solutions are Complex Fluids. A Mathematical Challenge
Classical thermodynamics and statistical mechanics describe systems in which nothing interacts with nothing. Even the highly refined theory of simple fluids does not deal very well with electrical interactions, boundary conditions, or flows, if at all. Electrical interactions, boundary conditions, and flows are essential features of living systems. Life without flow is death and so a different ...
متن کاملWhat Public Transit API Logs Tell Us about Travel Flows
In the field of smart cities, researchers need an indication of how people move in and between cities. Yet, getting statistics of travel flows within public transit systems has proven to be troublesome. In order to get an indication of public transit travel flows in Belgium, we analyzed the query logs of the iRail API, a highly expressive route planning API for the Belgian railways. We were abl...
